Frequently asked questions
Yes, Exercise Physiology treatment is safe. Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) undergo extensive training in exercise prescription, pathophysiology, and clinical assessment. They are skilled in identifying risk factors and modifying exercises to safely manage clients with complex conditions. If any concerns arise, your AEP will refer you to a GP or specialist. Your safety is our top priority.
People see an Exercise Physiologist for various reasons such as workplace injuries, neck or back pain, leg pain, sciatica, postural issues, weight-bearing problems, balance and walking difficulties, sports injuries, muscular sprains and strains, hip, knee or foot pain, shoulder or elbow pain, arthritis, scoliosis, osteoporosis, tendon issues, and headaches. Each condition is managed with targeted exercise interventions to improve function and reduce discomfort.
No, you do not need a referral to see an Accredited Exercise Physiologist — you can book an appointment directly.
However, if you have a diagnosed chronic health condition and require coordinated, ongoing care, you may be eligible for Chronic Disease Management (CDM) through Medicare. In this case, your GP must complete a CDM referral form to access subsidised Exercise Physiology treatment under a Team Care Arrangement (TCA). This allows eligible patients to receive a set number of rebated sessions per calendar year.
Initial consultations with an Accredited Exercise Physiologist typically last around 60 minutes. This includes a comprehensive medical and injury history, discussion of health goals, and a detailed physical assessment. Follow-up sessions usually run for 45 minutes, focusing on guided exercise, education, and adjustments to your program based on progress.
The number of visits needed depends on your condition, goals, and response to treatment. Chronic conditions often require more ongoing management compared to short-term issues. Your Exercise Physiologist will discuss this during your initial consultation. We focus on long-term wellbeing, functional independence, and sustainable behaviour change, offering clinic-based sessions, home exercise programs, and lifestyle strategies.
An initial Exercise Physiology consultation costs $132 + GST. This includes a comprehensive assessment and goal-setting session, in addition to any reports or communication between associated treaters. Follow-up sessions (45 minutes) are $99 + GST. Fees may vary based on referral pathways like Medicare CDM, NDIS, DVA, Workers Compensation, or other funding schemes. Private health rebates may be available depending on your cover and provider.
